Walking Tour of La Croix-Rousse – The Silk Weavers’ District
Meet us at Place de la Croix-Rousse, by the statue of Joseph Marie Jacquard, the inventor who revolutionized the silk industry. From here, set off on a 2-hour walking tour through the historic streets of La Croix-Rousse, a neighborhood shaped by the legacy of the canuts (silk workers).
Strolling through this former working-class district, you’ll discover how Lyon became the silk capital of Europe and learn about the daily lives of the artisans who lived and worked here. As we walk past the tall buildings with their distinctive large windows, designed to accommodate silk looms, you’ll hear stories of the great Canut Revolts that took place in the 19th century. We’ll also explore some of Croix-Rousse’s famous traboules, the hidden passageways that silk workers used to transport delicate fabrics while protecting them from the elements.
Today, La Croix-Rousse is known for its artistic and village-like atmosphere, and we’ll take in its lively markets, charming squares, and sweeping views over Lyon. This tour is perfect for those looking to experience a different side of the city, where history, tradition, and creativity blend seamlessly.
